Tepco Was Established In 1951 As An Electric Power Supplier To The Metropolitan Tokyo Area. Over The Past Half Century, During Which Japan Went Through Large Changes, Such As The Post-war High Growth Period, Two Major Oil Crises, And The Collapse Of The Bubble Economy, We Have Been Steadily Supplying Our Customers With Electricity, Which Is Essential To Modern Society. However, Today, We Are Experiencing An Extremely Difficult Situation Concerning The Security Of Energy Resources, Mainly Due To The Recent Surge In Oil Prices And A Growing Demand For Energy In Asia And Elsewhere. Moreover, Competition Between Energy Suppliers Has Been Intensifying Since The Liberalization Of The Retail Electricity Market. An Additional Burden On Tepco Is The Shutdown Of Our Kashiwazaki-kariwa Nuclear Power Station, Where All The Reactors Are Out Of Service In The Aftermath Of The Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake Of July 2007. This Has Had A Significant Impact On Tepco In Terms Of Revenues And The Business Environment, As Well As Our Mission Of Steadily Supplying Electricity. We Are Now Facing A Challenge Of Unprecedented Magnitude. Nevertheless, We Will Maintain A Positive Attitude And Try To Find Opportunities For Reform And Growth In The Face Of This Relentless Ordeal.
